Middlesbrough sack Michael Carrick and coaching staff after underwhelming season

Former Manchester United star dismissed after mixed results in the Championship as Middlesbrough finish 10th under his leadership

Middlesbrough Football Club have officially parted ways with head coach Michael Carrick and his entire backroom staff this afternoon.

The decision marks the end of Carrick’s tenure at the Riverside Stadium, which began in October 2022 and ends amid growing frustration over the team’s performance in the just-concluded season.

Michael Carrick, a former Manchester United midfielder and assistant coach , was brought in to steer the Boro back towards Premier League contention.

His arrival generated optimism among fans as many believed his wealth of top-flight experience would bring a fresh and tactical approach to the Championship side.

However, things did not go as planned in his second full season in charge. While Carrick had shown promise in his debut campaign, the 2024/25 season turned out to be disappointing for both the coach and the club.

Under his leadership, Middlesbrough played 49 matches in all competitions last season. The team managed to win 19 games and draw 10, but the remaining 20 games ended in defeat.

The inconsistency in results was a major talking point throughout the campaign.

Despite some memorable wins and flashes of attacking brilliance, Boro were plagued by defensive errors and lapses in concentration that led to unnecessary dropped points.

As a result, the club finished 10th in the Championship far below expectations and well outside the playoff spots.

Sources close to the club indicate that the decision to relieve Carrick of his duties was not taken lightly.

Club executives reportedly met early this week to evaluate the season’s outcome and the direction in which the team was heading.

After careful consideration, it was agreed that a change in leadership was necessary to rejuvenate the squad and re-ignite the club’s promotion ambitions.

In an official statement released by the club, Middlesbrough thanked Carrick and his staff for their service and professionalism during their time at the club.

“ We’d like to thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future”

“The club will be making no further comment at this stage” Middlesbrough added in an official statement.

Carrick’s departure now opens up one of the more high-profile managerial vacancies in the Championship.

With pre-season preparations looming, the search for a new head coach is expected to begin immediately. Several names have already been linked with the job, and fans will be eagerly watching to see who takes over at the helm.

As for Carrick, the 43-year-old is likely to take some time to reflect on his experience at Middlesbrough before deciding his next move. Given his reputation and connections in the football world, another coaching opportunity may not be too far away.

For now, though, Middlesbrough are looking to the future, hoping that a fresh start can help the club return to the heights they once knew.
