Liverpool seal €35m deal for Leverkusen star

Dutch Wing-Back Jeremie Frimpong Set to Ignite Liverpool’s Flanks After €35m Switch from Bundesliga Champions Bayer Leverkusen

Liverpool have officially agreed a deal to sign highly-rated Dutch wing-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, triggering his €35 million release clause in a major move ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 24-year-old underwent a medical earlier today and has already put pen to paper on a six-year contract that will keep him at Anfield until 2031.

However, the transfer will be formally completed on Sunday, when the transfer window officially opens.

Frimpong’s arrival is a major statement of intent by Liverpool as the club looks to bolster its defensive options and add more attacking flair to the flanks.

Known for his explosive pace, attacking prowess, and relentless work rate, Frimpong can operate both as a traditional right-back and as a more advanced right wing-back, a role in which he flourished under Xabi Alonso during Bayer Leverkusen’s title-winning campaign.

In 2023/2024 season, Frimpong was instrumental in helping Leverkusen lift the Bundesliga title for the first time in the club’s history.

In 47 appearances across all competitions, he scored an impressive 14 goals and provided 12 assists an exceptional numbers for a defender. His attacking output and versatility made him one of the most sought-after players in Europe this summer.

Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com for the first time, Frimpong said: “It went quite easy. Liverpool came and said they had interest, and obviously for me it was a no-brainer.

“For me, it was like, ‘Whatever you guys do, just get this done’, [speaking to] my agents: ‘Just get this done.’

“Liverpool fans, I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together.

“I’m just excited to be here. Thank you guys for accepting me and I won’t let you guys down and I’ll give you the energy that you guys want.”

With Real Madrid recently snapping up Leverkusen’s head coach, Xabi Alonso, and now Frimpong departing for Liverpool, the German champions are facing a summer of rebuilding.

Frimpong’s departure will certainly leave a significant void, but the club has already lined up potential replacements as they prepare for another busy season, including Champions League football.

Frimpong, who began his senior career at Celtic before moving to Germany in 2021, has developed into one of Europe’s most dynamic full-backs.

His move to Liverpool will see him compete with Conor Bradley for a spot in the starting eleven, although many believe the duo could complement each.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot is reportedly a big admirer of Frimpong’s style of play, and his ability to make overlapping runs, create space, and provide consistent attacking threats from the right is expected to play a major part in Slot’s tactical plans for the 2025/26 season.

The move also signals Liverpool’s intention to revamp the squad after what was a rollercoaster 2024/25 season.

With several key departures and fresh arrivals expected this summer, fans are hoping that the signing of Jeremie Frimpong will be the first of many in a new era for the Reds.

As the countdown to the official transfer window continues, Liverpool supporters have every reason to be excited, Frimpong is not just a signing for the present, but a long-term investment who brings both quality and potential to Anfield.
