The South Korean superstar made the announcement during a press conference ahead of Tottenham’s pre-season friendly match in South Korea, where they are set to face Newcastle United on Sunday.

With tears in his eyes but a smile on his face, Son confirmed that he will be leaving the club to pursue a new challenge abroad.

” I have decided to leave the club this summer. Respectfully the club is helping me with this decision,” said an emotional Son.

””It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision.

“I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change – 10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age. I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man.

“I want to say thank you to all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope the goodbye is also good timing and this is the right time to make that decision. I hope everyone can accept that and respect that.”

Son Heung-min joined Tottenham Hotspur in August 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen at the age of 23, becoming the most expensive Asian player at the time. Known for his explosive pace, two-footed finishing, and infectious personality, Son quickly became a fan favorite and one of the most feared forwards in the Premier League.

Son is fourth on the list of Spurs’ all-time record goalscorers behind only Harry Kane, Jimmy Greaves and Bobby Smith.

Now aged 33, Son has spent 10 full seasons at Spurs, racking up:

  • 173 goals in all competitions
  • 101 assists
  • 400+ appearances
  • One Premier League Golden Boot (2021–22, shared with Mohamed Salah)
  • A record-breaking partnership with Harry Kane, becoming the most prolific duo in Premier League history (47 goal combinations)

A Short Biography Of Son Heung-min

Born on July 8, 1992, in Chuncheon, South Korea, Son began his football journey in Germany with Hamburg, before moving to Bayer Leverkusen in 2013.

His performances in the Bundesliga caught the attention of Spurs, who brought him to North London two years later.

Son is also a national hero in South Korea. He has captained the national team, earned over 100 international caps, and played key roles in major tournaments including the World Cup and Asian Cup. In 2018, he won gold at the Asian Games, earning him military exemption in his home country.

New Chapter: Los Angeles FC Awaits

Son’s next destination will be Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) in Major League Soccer (MLS). The move brings an end to his time in Europe, but opens up new opportunities to grow his brand, enjoy a different football culture, and potentially dominate a new league.

The MLS side, based in California, is currently one of the most ambitious clubs in North America, having won the MLS Cup in recent seasons and signed big names like Gareth Bale in the past.
