Messi Reflects on Iconic Ronaldo Rivalry

Lionel Messi has opened up once again about his legendary rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo, calling it a “golden era” that pushed both players to extraordinary heights and left a lasting impact on the game.

The Argentine icon, who recently clinched his record eighth Ballon d’Or award was asked in an interview whether his three-Ballon d’or lead over Ronaldo marks the end of their long-standing rivalry.

Messi, however, was quick to dismiss the idea that the competition is over, offering a thoughtful reflection instead.

Lionel Messi said:

“No… it has always been an amazing rivalry from a sporting perspective. We benefitted from each other by raising the bar in this competition.

We were great competitors, and [Cristiano] always loved to achieve everything, all the time. It was a golden era for us and for all football fans.

Together, we deserve a lot of credit for staying at the top for all these years. Reaching the top is easy, but continuing and remaining there for many years is not. We were at the top together for 10-15 years. It was great and will remain a great memory for everyone.”

The two global superstars dominated world football for over a decade, constantly challenging each other while playing for rival Spanish giants( Messi at Barcelona and Ronaldo at Real Madrid).

Between 2008 and 2017, they won every Ballon d’Or except for one, reshaping football history and setting records that may never be broken.

Messi concluded by saying the era he shared with Ronaldo will remain a cherished memory, not only for him but for fans across generations.

“It was a special time. Something that will remain a beautiful memory for football.”

As both players near the twilight of their careers, Messi is now playing for Inter Miami in the MLS, and Ronaldo starring for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
