Osimhen brace confirms Turkish Cup trophy for Galatasaray

Victor Osimhen and Galatasaray completed the first step towards a domestic double on Wednesday, defeating Trabzonspor 3-0 on Wednesday to win the Turkish Cup.

It was an atmosphere of pure joy at the Gaziantep Stadium for supporters of the Istanbul giants who saw their team run away with the trophy in the second half. Barış Alper Yılmaz put the heavy favorites ahead in the 11th minute to give Galatasaray a halftime lead.

Then Osimhen did the rest. With less than a minute played in the second half, the Nigeria national team superstar received a pass from Yunus Akgün in the penalty box, muscled off a defender and then fired in a low effort to double the lead.

Trabzonspor put up a decent resistance but DR Congo striker Simon Banza and his side could not take advantage of their opportunities to put pressure Gala. When a clincial counter-attack led to Osimhen’s second goal in the 63rd minute, the trophy was firmly in grasp for the reigning Turkish Süper Lig champions.

It is Galatasaray’s 19th Turkish Cup title as they extend their record total. Now they turn their attention to wrapping up another Süper Lig title on Sunday, needing only a draw at home against Kayserispor to confirm their 25th domestic top flight title which is also a record in Turkish football. A domestic double this season would be the sixth time Galatasaray achieved the honor, the last last time coming in the 2018-19 campaign.

Osimhen finishes Turkish Cup play with five goals in four games. He has an amazing record of 35 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions for Galatasaray this season making him the first foreign player with the most goals in a season for Galatasaray.

Wednesday’s victory marks Osimhen’s second trophy in European football after previously winning the 2022-23 Serie A with Napoli, the club he is on loan from currently.
